WANYJOK, 10 June 2016 [Gurtong]- The arrests came after traders and members of the chamber of commerce blocked the newly appointed chairman from taking over his office. The attempt resulted into several injuries including innocent civilians who were present during the event.

Key ring leaders among the officials from the chamber of commerce in Aweil were arrested by the police.

An eyewitness told Gurtong on Monday that those arrested are still under detention.

“We don’t know who instructed the police but people were arrested over the weekend as peaceful demonstrations were still being carried out around Wanyjok town. As I talk they have arrested 8 of our officials. I don’t know whose supporters but we have seen them being taken to police station and locked up there.” Said an official who preferred to speak on condition of anonymity told Gurtong.

Deng Makol Athian, Aweil East Chamber of Commerce Secretary for Finance, said the members were detained without clear reasons.

Deng added that the traders have the right to elect their leader, blaming the national chamber for interfering in their affairs.
