South Sudan Rescues 92 Out Of 108 Abducted Ethiopian Children

Authorities in South Sudan have rescued up to 92 children out of the 108 abducted children from the Ethiopian town of Gambella by the armed Murle individuals who carried the raid in April this year.

JUBA, 11 June 2016 [Gurtong]- On Friday, 15th May 2016, a group of armed men later identified as Murle community from Pibor in South Sudan went to Gambella, a neighbouring town of Ethiopia and abducted more than 100 children and raided hundreds head of cattle.

Ethiopian government spokesman Getachew Reda reported, that the assailants abducted 108 children and taken 2,000 head of livestock, 208 dead and 75 people wounded.

Michael Makuei Lueth, South Sudan government spokesperson said onFriday while briefing the reporters after the Council of Ministers meeting that security reported that 92 abducted children have been rescued and returned to Ethiopia.

“The security reported that so far up to now 92 children out of the children who were abducted by the Murle from Ethiopia have been recovered and they have been returned to the Ethiopia” said Makuei.

Last month, the government confirmed it had returned a total of 56 children that were recovered from Rukwangule village in Pibor, a Murle inhabited area in South Sudan.

Hon. Michael Makuei Lueth, South Sudan Minister of Information and Government spokesperson said on Friday that the government has now return 56 children to Ethiopia and more efforts underway to recover the remaining number.

Following the incident in April, authorities from both sides of the countries beefed up security and investigations to recover the abducted children.

SPLA spokesperson Brig. Gen. Lul Ruai Koang had urged and assured the Ethiopian government and the parents of the abducted children that his government was working to recover the abducted children.
