YIROL, 05 July 2016 [Gurtong]- The debate which was held under the motion, ‘early marriages should be abolished’ saw different views from the students.
Early and forced marriages are widespread in South Sudan. Even before the start of the civil war in December 2013, UNICEF reported that 52 percent of all girls were married under the age of 18.
However this is slowing changing as the law forbids anyone under the age of 18 to be married off.
The Speaker who was the guest of honour appreciated the administration of the school for initiating debate clubs in the school.
Eastern Lakes State Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports, Nelson Makoi Makur said he was impressed by the speakers from the two sides of the debate.
He also said that his ministry will ensure that communities are sensitised on issues dealing with earl and forced marriages in order to stop the practice.
