JUBA, 1 July 2016 [Gurtong]- Kiir in his presidential order number 17/2016 said that all Sudan People Liberation Movement and Army in Opposition (SPLM/A – in Opposition) under FVP Dr. Riek Machar that had been fighting against TGONU since Thursday, July 7 through the weekend are pardoned and can now freely return to Juba for the implementation of the peace agreement.
Fighting started on July 7 when the government accused members of the SPLA-IO of having intentionally killed 5 government forces including a medical doctor at Gudele One check point.
On Friday, at the Presidential Palace (J1 Residence) intense confrontation broke out between Machar’s loyalists and forces of President Kiir when the leaders were discussing a topic related to tensions between the two sides and insecurity in Juba town.
The government Spokesperson, Michael Makuei Lueth earlier reported that the incident at J1 Residence left about 300 men dead and accused Machar’s loyalists of having instigated the clashes while the two leaders were in a meeting.
South Sudan’s two rival principals, President Kiir and his First Vice President, Dr Riek Machar signed a peace deal last August to end the two years conflict that started in 2013 due to an increasing power struggle between them in the ruling SPLM party.
The recent clashes occurred in Juba when nation was marking its 5th Independence Anniversary after it split from the Sudan.
On Monday evening, President Kiir issued an order for an immediate ceasefire which was echoed by Dr Machar on his forces two hours later.
