JUBA, 14 July 2016 [Gurtong]: President Salva Kiir Mayardit today said his government will not allow the intervention of more foreign forces to maintain security in South Sudan.

“As to whether I will accept the intervention forces from anywhere, no. There are over 12,000 foreign troops here in South Sudan. What do you need more forces? What will they come and do?” President Kiir said.

President Kiir was responding to the demand of the Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD) Communiqué of the 56th Extra-ordinary session of the IGAD council of ministers on the situation in South Sudan.

Kiir added, “The United Nation Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) here has so many foreign troops. So we will not accept even a single soldier. We will not accept that”.

The IGAD council of ministers on the situation in South Sudan, held in Nairobi, Kenya, on the 11th July 2016 demanded urgent revision of the UNMISS mandate to establish an intervention brigade and increase numbers of troops from the region to inter alia secure Juba.

Among the demand also includes the immediate ceasefire which the President has already done and reciprocated by Dr. Riek Machar Teny, leader of the SPLM/A-IO.
