S.Sudan’s Liberal Party Welcomes Bashir’s Initiative To Host Kiir, Machar Talks In Khartoum

WAU June 26, 2018 [Gurtong] -In a statement released on Monday signed by the party’s chairman, Peter Mayen Majongdit, the party thanks H.E. President Bashir for encouraging both leaders to make a step toward peace and commend the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and other international partners for their continued efforts and support to bring lasting peace to the people of South Sudan.

“We the PLP are encouraged by the recent decisions and announcements resulting from the IGAD Heads of States Summit in Addis Ababa, engaging South Sudan’s primary drivers of violence personified in Kiir from one hand side, and Machar from the other, to sign the revitalized Agreement based on IGAD’s Bridging Proposal. We also welcome the targeted punitive measures endorsed by the IGAD Council of Ministers during its 62nd Extra-Ordinary Session,” reads the statement in part.

“The people of South Sudan have been suffering for too long. The two parties need to present actionable steps towards a comprehensive and durable peace, not only for the people of South Sudan alone but for the benefit of the entire region. South Sudan’s crisis has grown to become a crisis affecting all countries in the region, putting the vital national security interests of our neighbours at stake” it continued.

The statement also stated that despite the risks, Sudan has a long-standing tradition of hosting refugees. For decades, it has kept its doors open to people fleeing war, hunger and hardship as it host refugees from Eritrea, Syria, Yemen, Chad and other countries.

Machar are and Kiir are now in Khartoum for a second round of talks after they failed to agree last week in Addis Ababa.
