JUBA, 27 August 2018 [Gurtong]-The Khartoum Round of Talks for ending the conflict in South Sudan was adjourned on August 19 to August 27 to allow for the people of Sudan celebrate Eid al-Adha.

The day before the adjournment, a full draft of the revitalized Agreement for Resolution of Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (ARCSS), 2018 was shared with all stakeholders to the talks for their comments.

They reviewed the draft document and made few observations. The Sudanese Chief Mediator, who is also the foreign affairs minister Al-Dirdiri Mohamed Ahmed, said those observations would be made available to all the parties for reflections and final decision.

The warring parties in a joint statement last week said they remained committed to full implementation of the revitalized agreement.

“We expect to conclude and renew our quest for a united, peaceful and prosperous society based on justice, equality, respect for human rights and the rule of law,” the parties said.

“While we will continue to engage on the remaining issues, and in particular on how to translate these framework agreements into programmes and plans of action for lasting peace and development, today, we affirm our joint commitment to full implementation of this agreement, the Khartoum Declaration and Agreements on the Outstanding Security and Governance Issues,” the statement read.

Rajab Mohandis, a Civil Society Delegate at the Peace Talks said the talks would resume on Monday for a “very short period” to discuss some issues on transitional security arrangements; development of the matrix of implementation, and addressing the changes made in Chapters 1 & 2 in the rest of the Chapters of the peace agreement.
