NIMULE, 07 November 2018 [Gurtong
]-In a statement extended to the media on Wednesday, the Japanese diplomat Mr. Sejji Okada said the donation was meant to strengthen the operational capacity of the local immigration and border officials.

The Japanese diplomat was accompanied by General John Akot Maluth, the Director of Department of Nationality, Passport and Immigration and the IOM Chief of Mission in South Sudan Mr. William Barigga.

Nimule is the main entry port into South Sudan and is a major trade route from East African countries such Uganda, and Kenya. Much of the goods sold in Juba and other parts of the country transit across this border.

En route to northern Africa and beyond the Mediterranean Sea, migrants from the East and Horn of Africa enter through Nimule town.

“Japan is committed to providing support to capacity building in South Sudan, particularly at its borders. The border management is crucial for the stability of the country as well as economic development of the South Sudan by creating economic environment to flourish through well managed flows of people and goods,” Mr. Okada said.

He said the Japanese support aimed at establishing a one-stop border post in Nimule and to strengthen cross-border coordination between relevant government agencies of Juba and Kampala and to further enhance border integrity.

Japan has been supporting the South Sudan Immigration sector since 2012.
The South Sudan Director General of Nationality, Passport and Immigration General John Akot acknowledged the support from the Asian country, saying it would strengthen the border coordination with neighboring countries.
