JUBA, 28 November 2018 [Gurtong]-The proposed peace talks between the Al-Bashir regime and the fractured opposition groups will be mediated by South Sudanese President, Salva Kiir Mayardit who offered to mediate the talks.

Kiir's mediation will involve all rebel groups fighting Khartoum, including those in Blue Nile, Southern Kordofan and Darfur.

This comes after the Sudanese President mediated the South Sudan peace talks which led to signing of a peace deal in September.

The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM)-North groups came to Juba on October 13 to start the reunification process of their fractured party.

A Sudanese opposition leader told reporters in Juba on Monday that “the process of reunification of the SPLM has already started,” and that President Kiir has already met the two groups in Juba.

“We are optimistic that we are going to unite the SPLM-north. We trust President Salva Kiir in mediating this process,” one of the opposition leaders who did not want to be named said.
“We see that this is a new chance and this chance will be utilized. This is a new situation we want to regain the strategic relation between the two Sudans,”he added.

The SPLM-N has split into two factions, but one of its leaders, said: “The unity of the SPLM is the only way to survive in the harsh environment of the north.

After South Sudan achieved independence from Sudan in 2011, the States of Blue Nile and South Kordofan which both have large ethnic minority populations who fought alongside the south were left north of the border.

The Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N), which had been part of Kiir's SPLM, launched an insurgency against Khartoum in the two States that same year.
