Calling For Kiir and Riek To Give South Sudan A Break!

"It is madness and silly of us to continue to think that there will be peaceful elections in which the two will compete, then accept the winner as legitimately elected".

By Jacob J Akol*

I will be dancing in the streets with pride when President Kiir and Dr Riek Machar voluntarily and jointly declared that they will be standing down from competing for the position of the next elected president of South Sudan.

That they will devote the remaining Interim Period to touring the country together, preaching peace and reconciliation and asking for support to retire peacefully the hundreds of thousands of armed men they have recruited for their safety and quest for power.

Doing that can release a lot of penned up energy amongst citizens; for us to move forward as a nation.

Other leaders of armed groups may follow suit.

It is madness and silly of us to continue to think that there will be peaceful elections in which the two will compete, then accept the winner as legitimately elected. Have we not seen enough of those wasted opportunities?

Wise up South Sudanese. President Kiir and Dr Riek please give South Sudan a break! You have done enough good for and much, much, harm to South Sudan!
