Bari Community Has Diverse Religious Following

"I pray that our Archdiocese of Juba doesn't break up and let us all overcome this challenge and build a stronger Metropolitan Archdiocese that includes all South Sudanese and those who live within the Archdiocese."

By Roger Alfred Yoron Modi

I don't want to underestimate the grievances of those against the appointment of the Archbishop of Juba. It's up-to Vatican to make conclusion. It's also not right to call the entire Bari community tribal over the current disputes. Even there are a number of Bari who support the appointment of the Archbishop while there are others have not taken side with those who are protesting.

Moreover, the Chairman of Bari Community Hon. Cornelio Befo recently made it clear that Bari Community is made up of people from various denominations, including Protestants, while others are Muslims, etc and that the Community has nothing to do with what's going on in the Catholic Archdiocese of Juba.

In December last year, I promised to make a comprehensive analysis and give my opinion in an article over the issues, but I later decided that up to now, as someone who knows the Catholic Archdiocese of Juba in and out, my article would do more harm than good for the Archdiocese and the Country at large. That's why I decided to remain silent and refrain from expressing my opinion. Maybe I shall change my mind in the near future as the situation changes. I don't know. But whatever the case maybe, I'm a journalist, I can't campaign for any side.

All I can say now is that violence, especially by the faithful, over a religious matter is wrong and unacceptable. Available peaceful avenues and dialogue should be explored, even if it means resorting to a Court of law.

As a compromise, it's also not a problem to create a new Diocese in northern or southern Bari given the number of faithful there, while the Archdiocese of Juba remains a Metropolitan one that includes all people, as long as the Capital City of South Sudan shall remain in Juba.

Still, Vatican shall be the one to make final descion.

I pray that our Archdiocese of Juba doesn't break up and let us all overcome this challenge and build a stronger Metropolitan Archdiocese that includes all South Sudanese and those who live within the Archdiocese.
