Yei County Confirms 7 Cases Of Coronavirus Still Socialising Freely

"The YCSOF with deep concern noted that, the 07 confirmed cases are still associating or socializing in the communities and two out of seven patients have left Yei for Lainya and Juba."

The Yei Civil Society Organization forum (YCSOF) commends the efforts of Yei River County Taskforce on COVID-19 on the fight against the pandemic in the county through its awareness raising on the prevention guidelines, provision of Non Food Item WASH, information tracking and surveillance.

According to the High Level Task Force on COVID-19 report One Hundred and Ninety Four (194) confirmed positive cases in the country with 2 recoveries; among which Seven (07) Positive cases of Coronavirus confirmed in Yei.

The YCSOF with deep concern noted that, the 07 confirmed cases are still associating or socializing in the communities and two out of seven patients have left Yei for Lainya and Juba; therefore the community of Yei River County and beyond is at high risk since these positive confirmed cases are locally transmitted.

Therefore, YCSOF strongly believed, it is unacceptable to keep the patients at home, given our cultural setting, coupled with rigidity/reluctance of some patients to comply with preventive guidelines.

The YCSOF recommends the following measures to mitigate the gaps identified:

1. YCSOF call upon the Yei Taskforce on COVID-19 and the defunct Yei River State Task Force on COVID-19 to URGENTLY to renovate and equip the identified quarantine center approximately 2 miles along Yei-Kaya road.

2. YCSOF calls on the Yei Taskforce on COVID-19 and the defunct Yei River State Task Force to monitor the asymptomatic patients closely and refer them to Isolation center as soon as possible to avoid chances of more infections in the community.

3. We strongly recommend for the Taskforce on COVID-19 to increase surveillance, tracking/tracing of the cases tested positive and their contacts in different counties of defunct Yei River State.

4. YCSOF calls on the government authority and humanitarian partners to support and provide Protective Personal Equipment (PPE) to Health Workers, Law Enforcement Agencies such as Traffic Police, Joint Monitoring Agencies since they have direct contacts with many people in Yei River County and other Counties of Defunct Yei River State.

5. YCSOF calls on the civilian, organized forces and military to strictly follow the preventive guidelines provided by the National Ministry of Health in partnership with World Health Organization.

6. The newly formed Defunct Yei River State Task Force on COVID-19 should recognize the inclusion of civil society organizations i.e. Media Houses and Community leaders in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic in the defunct Yei River State.

7. We also strongly recommend to the High Level Task Force (HLTF) on COVID-19 should coordinate and support the state task force in responding to COVID-19 preparedness and intervention at the local level.

The YCSOF demand the High Level Task Force (HLTF) on COVID-19 to install testing machine and ventilator in Yei to help in fighting the pandemic.

9. The Yei Civil Society Organizations Forum-YCSOF also urged the parties to the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS) and Hold out groups to respect Cessation of Hostility Agreement (CoHA) and Rome declaration to enable development and humanitarian partners to have access to hard to reach areas in order to increase awareness on the prevention and mitigation of COVID-19 pandemic in defunct Yei River State.
